  • What is a doula?

    April 7, 2026

If you’re asking “What is a doula?” – whether you’re an expectant mother seeking additional support, or an aspiring birth worker interested in providing maternal support – I’m glad you’re here!

A doula, by definition, is a person trained to provide advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth. But, a doula is so much more than that simple definition.

While there are many types of doulas, the focus of this blog is the birth and postpartum doula – that’s the type of work I do and love!

During pregnancy, a doula provides educational support, helps you prepare mentally and physically for birth, supports you in creating a birth plan, offers gentle guidance on nutrition and movement, and offers emotional support as needed.

During labor, a doula offers continuous support – hands-on comfort like hip squeezes and counter pressure, verbal affirmations and encouragement, position change suggestions, breath work guidance, and education during every stage.

Post-birth, postpartum doulas continue that care – supporting recovery, offering assistance with newborn care, infant feeding, helping implement practices that support the body’s healing process, and overall helping the family adjust to this new chapter of life.

But, beyond all that, a doula holds space. She is the steady, calming presence in a time that can feel overwhelming and full of unknowns. She reminds you to breathe. She helps you feel safe. She sees YOU – not as a patient – but as a mother becoming. In moments of doubt, she anchors you. In moments of strength, she reflects that power back to you. She empowers you. She helps you achieve your goals in birth and motherhood. She provides comforting care tailored to your needs. She truly cares.

Now, let’s dive into what a doula does NOT do – yes, there are limits! It’s important to understand that a doula is not a medical provider. She does not perform clinical tasks or make decisions on your behalf. She does not take the role of your midwife or OBGYN. Instead, she works alongside your care team – supporting you, helping you understand your options, and ensuring your voice is heard. It’s a common misconception that doulas advocate for mothers, but, on the contrary, a good doula will teach the mother how to advocate for herself.

Birth is not just a physical event – it’s emotional, mental, and deeply transformative. Having continuous support during this time, can make all the difference in how you experience and perceive birth. When a mother feels safe, supported, confident, and informed, she is more likely to have a positive birth experience – and that matters.

You might benefit from a doula if:

    • You want continuous emotional support during labor
    • You feel unsure or overwhelmed about birth
    • You want someone present who is there just for you
    • You want to feel more confident and empowered
    • You value a calm, grounded birth space
    • You want to be educated with evidence-based information without fear mongering
    • You want to explore more non-medical comfort measures
    • You want gentle, personalized guidance as you transition to motherhood

Every doula brings unique techniques and talents to the table. My personal approach is rooted in creating a calm, grounded, and supportive environment where mothers feel safe to trust their instincts and their bodies. I believe birth is a natural, physiological process – not something to fear, but something to move through with support, education, and trust. My care leans more holistic and nurturing. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach – every mother, every birth, every baby, and every experience is different. The relationship I build with each client allows me to tailor my support in a way that truly meets her where she is.

By holding space, listening, and staying attuned to your needs, I help create an environment that feels safe, steady, and supportive – so you can soften, trust, and fully emerge yourself in your birth experience.

Whether you’re planning a home birth, hospital birth, or birth center birth, my goal is always to walk alongside you and help you feel empowered every step of the way.

If you’re considering having a doula by your side, or simply exploring what kind of support feels right for you, know that you deserve to feel safe, heard, and supported.

If you’re local to North Florida, particularly the Leon and Wakulla County area, I would love to connect with you and talk more about how I can support you through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

No matter what you choose, you deserve to feel held in this experience.
